Mariño Wins Pollock-Krasner Award. It hasn’t been announced officially yet, but Armando Mariño couldn’t wait to let us know: he’s won a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, one of the most prestigious private funders of individual artists worldwide. “Another news item for the Cuban Art News bulletin!” he writes. Mariño was also selected for participation in The (S) Files 2011, the biennial at New York’s El Museo del Barrio, on view through January 8.

Los Van Van Hit L.A., New York, Miami—and Louisville. After last-minute visa problems in August, Juan Formell and Los Van Van finally launched a shortened U.S. tour last week at Los Angeles’s Conga Room, “triggering a giant dance party that roared on late into the night,” as the Los Angeles Times put it, adding, “Some of those present may be dancing still.” Last night, the band tore it up at La Boom New York in Queens. Tonight, they’ll be at SOB’s, Saturday night (September 24) at Miami’s Aché Super Club—and then a week later, in Louisville, Kentucky at the Coconut Beach Club.

Teatro de la Luna in Delirio Habanero. Early next month, audiences in Winston-Salem, North Carolina will have a rare opportunity to see one of Cuba’s most acclaimed theatrical troupes in their latest work, Delirio Habanero (Havana Delirium). A musical set amid the economic hardships of the “Special Period” in the early 1990s, Delirio Habanero revisits high points of Cuban popular culture through three characters who assume the identities of salsa queen Célia Cruz, singing great Beny Moré, and Varilla, a bartender made famous by Ernest Hemingway in the 1950s. Sponsored by Wake Forest University, the bilingual performance of Delirio Habanero will be presented on Thursday, October 6 at the Stevens Center in downtown Winston-Salem. Teatro de la Luna’s U.S. tour continues with October 20-21 performances in Miami.
