Celebrating its fifth anniversary, PINTA New York brings together close to 50 galleries for Latin American art in the U.S., Latin America, the U.S., and the Caribbean—including three from Havana.
Kicking off with an opening-night gala on Thursday, November 10, the fair runs through Sunday, November 13. Among the participating galleries are several that regularly feature Cuban art and artists, such as Magnan Metz and Frederico Séve in New York and Gary Nader Fine Art and Pan American Art Projects in Miami.
The roster of galleries also includes three from Havana: Acacia Gallery, one of the island’s oldest commercial galleries, Habana Gallery, specializing in Cuban contemporary art, and Cuban Art Projects.
“Since its inception, PINTA has seen a growing participation by Cuban galleries,” said Diego Costa Peuser, the fair’s director. “Habana Gallery, for example, has been part of every edition in New York and London, and Acacia Gallery has also participated in PINTA London. But we have always had other galleries from Miami, New York, and Santo Domingo that have presented works by Cuban artists.”
In total, says Costa Peuser, works by more than 30 Cuban artists, based in Havana and elsewhere around the world, will be shown in this edition of the fair. Among them are such internationally acclaimed artists as José Bedia, Alexandre Arrechea, Kcho, and Antonio Eligio Fernández (Tonel), as well as such past masters as Emilio Sánchez and Raúl Martínez.
This year’s fair will be held at a new location: 7 West 34th Street in Manhattan. Along with the galleries, the fair will feature a section of artists’ projects curated by Italian art critic Jacopo Crivelli Visconti. The guest artist for this year’s fair is Antonio Manuel, a Brazilian artist active in the neo-avant-garde movement of the 1960s. Manuel is the subject of a solo exhibition now on view at the Americas Society. The museum is offering a guided tour of the show to PINTA visitors on November 9, the day before the fair opens.
Begun in 2007, PINTA’s Museum Acquisitions Program enables arts institutions to acquire works from the fair for their collections, with PINTA covering part of the purchase cost. Institutions participating in the 2011 fair include The Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York; the Newark Museum, New Jersey; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
“In addition to the modern art sold in Latin American art auctions,” concludes Costa Peuser, “what a collector of Cuban art will find in PINTA is a group of contemporary artists based in Havana who are a constant presence at biennials and international art shows. This reaffirms the fact that PINTA, in its fifth year, has established its own space in the art sphere.”
