Carlos Garaicoa, an exhibition of new and recent work by the Cuban artist, opens on Thursday, June 10 at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). Garaicoa’s first exhibition in the city of James Joyce and Francis Bacon explores such themes as the city and memory, the failure of utopias, and the “alternate histories” hidden in official narratives.
Curated by Seán Kissane, acting senior curator and head of exhibitions at the IMMA, the exhibition features manipulated photographs, architectural maquettes, drawings, and videos.
Accompanying the exhibition is a fully illustrated catalogue, Carlos Garaicoa: Overlapping, with essays by Kissane, curator and critic Okwui Enwezor, and Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, director of the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum in Mexico City.
Garaicoa will present an artist’s talk at the IMMA on Wednesday, June 9, followed by an exhibition preview and wine reception.
Carlos Garaicoa runs through September 5. For additional details, see the IMMA press release.
