June 22, 2010In the same year that the Bolsheviks claimed power in Russia, Leo Matiz was born in the Colombian town of Arataca, also home of renowned writer Gabriel García Márquez. Matiz took photos of Castro in Venezuela in 1959; now, half a century later, his images are being displayed in Havana, and Matiz is acclaimed as a master of 20th-century Latin American photography.
June 07, 2010"Carlos Garaicoa," an exhibition of new and recent work by the Cuban artist, opens on Thursday, June 10 at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). Garaicoa’s first exhibition in the city of James Joyce and Francis Bacon explores such themes as the city and memory, the failure of utopias, and the “alternate histories” hidden in official narratives.
June 04, 2010Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight, an exhibition of 30 artworks inspired by the legendary ballerina, opened June 3 at Magnan Metz Gallery in New York’s Chelsea art district.The opening coincided with the American Ballet Theater’s 90th-birthday salute to Alonso, which took place that evening.
